The Chicken
This painting seems at first glance to be dark due to the use of black, but closer examination reveals that the darkness is due to the predominant use of LOW VALUES of blue and green. In this way artists use color to evoke emotion or an intense feeling. It is further achieved in this painting by the use of slashing brush strokes, and the contrasting of the low values with the HIGH VALUE of the dead chicken in the center.
