Liberation of Saint Peter from Prison
The gradual transition of light to dark in this painting (the CHIAROSCURO), creates the illusion of a single light source, and the gentle contrast creates modeling of the figures and a sense of depth. Such a technique for defining forms in painting was common in Western art from the Renaissance to the 19th century.
