Chromatic Accrement
Variations (gradation) of values, especially sharp contrasts can act to guide the viewer's eye and evoke a sense of movement.
ILLUMINATION, either by natural or artificial light, creates highlights and shadows which represent the form. Using light and dark in painting to represent light and shadow in nature is called CHIAROSCURO. Contrasting values and light patterns playing over solid objects give the illusion of three-dimension form on a two-dimensional surface.
