Artists also use color as a symbol. In the Middle Ages, artists were less interested in realism than they were is expressing mystical ideas. The pure blue of the Virgin's robe, decorated with a gold star, is meant to symbolize the blue of heaven, and represents the idea of the Virgin Mary as Queen of Heaven.
