Virgin and Child with Angels
Artists also use color as a symbol. In the Middle Ages, artists were less interested in realism than they were is expressing mystical ideas. The pure blue of the Virgin's robe, decorated with a gold star, is meant to symbolize the blue of heaven, and represents the idea of the Virgin Mary as Queen of Heaven. TEXTURE Texture is the surface quality of an object. Artists often try to duplicate or exaggerate the myriad textures found in nature.
