Peony
Heo Ryeon (1808-1893), whose pen name was Sochi, was one of the most remarkable painters to emerge during the final period of Joseon. He painted a wide variety of themes, such as landscapes, portraits, as well as flowers and birds. It is said that Heo Ryeon painted many such ink peony paintings in his latter days. The various tones of ink present in this painting are evidence of the artist's ability to exhibit the solidity of the features.(text: MFA Boston)
