Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva with Water and Moon
This painting captures a scene in which the famous young Buddhist follower Sudhana, seeking after Buddhist sages, listens to the teachings of Avalokitesvara. Based on the Chapter on Entering the Dharma Realm, The Avatamsaka Sutra of the 40 volume Edition, the scene has Avalokitesvara as its central figure who is seated in the "amusement posture" with round head radiance that symbolizes the moon. The bodhisattva is surrounded by symbolic objects such as bamboo, blue bird, willow, kundika and rock, and there is a pond of spring water that represents the Mountain Potalaka where Avalokitesvara is believed to reside. Two Buddhist followers, Sudhana and the offerer of this painting, are at the bodhisattva's either side with prayer hands. (Text: MFA, Boston)
